Just a few reminders before you leave today...

  • We have a revision session on Thursday, 14 June.
  • Lyotard is not just an item of clothing.
  • I am just an email or tweet away, if you have a question.
  • This email may have been written by the real Mr Michie or his Digital Self; and you'll never be 100% sure which one did it!
  • Keep an eye on Twitter, if I find anything useful, from this point on that's where I be sharing it.
  • I will mark any essays that you send me. The final date I will take anything in, is Tuesday, 12 June.
  • And don't forget the true meaning of Po-Mo is... (link)

A2: 2011 UK Riots: A Hyperreal Event?

Christmas Homework: Part 1:

Based on your understanding of Baudrillard's theory of Hyperreality, complete the following essay. You must refer to the David Buckingham article: "There's a riot going on" featured in Media Magazine - December 2011. However, you may also wish to refer to the 9/11 and Saddam Statue examples as well as 'The Matrix' and 'Blade Runner' to support your arguments.

"The 2011 UK Riots can only be understood as a hyperreal event." To what extent do you agree with this statement?

The word count is 800. Please read over your targets from your previous assessment before completing this one.

Christmas Homework: Part 2:

Complete the following research (you might want to do this before you write the essay):

  • What is the 'effects model'?
  • What is the agenda setting model'?
  • What is the 'uses and gratifications' theory?
  • What is 'selective exposure'?
  • What is 'selective perception'?

Bonus Material: Here are David Buckingham' slides that accompanied a presentation he gave at the Media Magazine conference. They make a useful accompaniment to the article.

AS/ A2: Useful Websites to support your learning!

Media Magazine - Physical copies can be found in the Media room and the LRC. For access to the online site please ask Mr Michie for the username and password.

MediaKnowall - A sound, reasonably detailed site; not a bad place to start at the beginning of the unit.

Theory.org.uk - Excellent site created by David Gauntlett - particularly useful for AS students studying Audiences and Institutions and A2 students developing their theoretical knowledge.

Media Studies Ringwood - An excellent blog; an excellent school - check out the resources here and also take the time to watch the excellent coursework produced by the students.

Long Road Media - One of the most successful Media college's in the country. Resources are of the highest order, as is the work produced by the students who attend.

Robert Smyth School
 - Excellent range of resources.

OCR Virtual Media Studies
 - Provides good information and some useful resources - definitely a case of pick and choose.

Y13 Cover Work From Mr Michie - Thursday 12th November

You need to complete the following tasks:

Read the two documents I have uploaded for you.  The first is the perspective of a student (similar age to yourselves) responding to the topic of censorship.  The second is the response from a Head of Media Studies from another school.

Using the information from their articles answer the following essay question in as much detail as possible.

Is regulation and/or censorship of the Media necessary?

You may also draw upon any of the material you have been given so far, anything you have researched yourself and any evidence from the case studies we have looked at.

Your responses need to be complete and handed in to me on Monday.

Regards
Mr. M.
